Highway Plan:

Downton Hartford is the subject of much attention and much construction lately.  Local news outlets are reporting infrastructure plans that are meant to give the city a much needed economic boost. The plan to reroute a major highway in Hartford is a part of the much larger $2billion infrastructure plan proposed by the Biden administration. This plan is a topic of local discussion, the highway will be redone for a third time.  One of the documented goals of the highway plan is “equity”, yet theres no explanation as to how exactly this plan is equitable. As the interview revealed, equity just seems to be tacked on for show, and theres no substance to the claim. Mainly, the highway plan doesn’t include local input; and much of it is being influenced by Doug Suisman, a former Hartford resident. It’s important to have engineers, and qualified planners as a part of the designing process, but locals are equally as important. After all, residents have to live with the daily impacts of the highway.

Downtown Hartford is also very much focused on “complete streets” which is also something iQuilt has a part in. Complete streets incorporate the needs of pedestrians, bikes, and vehicles, while also ensuring all parties are safe.
